4-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech to Fes: Cross the High Atlas Mountains to visit Ait Benhaddou (UNESCO site) and Ouarzazate’s film studios, then explore the Roses Valley and Dades Gorge. Journey to Merzouga for a camel trek and night in a desert camp among Erg Chebbi’s dunes.
Travel toward Fes via Erfoud’s fossil workshops, Ziz Valley’s palm oases, Midelt’s apple orchards, and Azrou’s cedar forest (home to wild monkeys), before concluding in Ifrane (“Morocco’s Switzerland”) and Fes.
After meeting at our designated departure point, we’ll journey southeast through the High Atlas Mountains via the spectacular Tizi-n-Tichka pass (2,260m). Enjoy panoramic mountain views and glimpses of traditional Berber villages along the route.
Our first major stop is the UNESCO-listed Ait Benhaddou, a magnificent fortified ksar that has served as backdrop for numerous films since the 1960s. Explore the ancient clay architecture before lunch at a local kasbah restaurant.
We then continue through Ouarzazate to reach the stunning Dades Valley, where we’ll spend the night at a comfortable hotel or riad.
After breakfast, we depart for the breathtaking Todra Gorges, passing numerous picturesque kasbahs along the way. The well-paved road from Tineghir leads us to the gorge’s towering 300-meter cliffs – a paradise for rock climbers and photographers alike.
Following a refreshing walk through the gorge and lunch in a local village, we visit a fossil workshop in Erfoud before reaching the golden dunes of Merzouga. Here, you’ll mount camels for a sunset trek to our desert camp, where a traditional Berber dinner and live drum performance around the campfire await under the stars.
Wake early for a magical desert sunrise before breakfast. We then leave Merzouga, passing through Erfoud’s famous fossil district and along the world’s largest continuous palm grove – a stunning 20km stretch of thousands of date palms.
Our journey continues through the lush Ziz Valley, fed by waters from the High Atlas, before arriving in Midelt, known as Morocco’s apple capital, for our overnight stay.
Departing Midelt, we cross the High Atlas Mountains to Azrou, where we’ll visit ancient cedar forests home to resident Barbary macaques.
Our final stop is Ifrane, nicknamed “Little Switzerland” for its charming European-style architecture and alpine atmosphere, before concluding our tour in Fes.
